Namakaranam is a sacred Hindu ritual performed to officially name a newborn baby.
It is one of the important Samskaras (Vedic life rituals) that purifies the child and blesses them with a prosperous, healthy, and successful life ahead.
The baby’s name, chosen based on the Nakshatra (birth star), is whispered into the baby’s right ear by the father or a family elder, signifying the official naming of the child.

The ceremony begins with Vinayaka Pooja, invoking Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles and bless the ritual with success and auspiciousness.
The priest performs Punyahavachanam by chanting Vedic mantras and sprinkling sanctified water to purify the baby, family, and surroundings.
The priest sets up the Kalasham and takes a Sankalpa (divine resolution), mentioning the baby’s name-giving purpose, date, and family details.
Some families perform Ayushya Homam (Fire ritual for long life and health) alongside the Namakaranam, especially if the baby is completing 11 or 16 days since birth.
The priest recites the baby’s Janma Nakshatra and Rashi (birth star and zodiac sign).
Elders bless the baby by sprinkling Akshata (turmeric rice) and offering gifts, gold, or silver items.

Vaathiyar and devotees take a vow stating the purpose of the Homam — such as health, prosperity, or spiritual purification.
Holy water is sanctified and sprinkled to purify the place, the participants, and all pooja materials.
Kalasams (sacred pots) are placed and worshipped, symbolizing divine presence and blessings.
The ritual begins with invoking Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles and ensure the successful completion of the Homam.
The sacred fire (Agni) is invoked with mantras, as it is the divine messenger carrying the offerings to the Gods.
Ghee, herbs, grains, and other offerings are poured into the fire while chanting powerful Vedic mantras specific to the Homam being performed.
Devotees walk around the fire and offer salutations, signifying surrender and gratitude to the divine.
Aarti is performed to the deities, symbolizing the removal of darkness and spreading of divine light.
